The founder story

Joe Sullivan, and the firm Chris started in 2019.

Joe Sullivan built International Market Recruiters after a career in financial markets and years of learning the recruiting business firsthand. He was Chris Sullivan's hero, mentor, business partner, and best friend.

Chris studied finance, worked in Wall Street operations, and learned early that a large corporate environment was not where he wanted to spend his career. He later joined his father in recruiting. Joe did not want Chris to inherit a platform and wonder whether the success belonged to him. When Joe retired, Chris started Emerald in 2019 and had to build the firm on his own shoulders.

The early years were not a straight line. There was momentum, there were setbacks, and there was COVID. The business then accelerated. Chris later lost Joe, who had become both his closest friend and his business partner. Emerald today is the principles Joe taught — specialization, intensity, honesty, and humanity — with a broader front-office reach and technology Joe would not have imagined.

Old-school principles. Modern tools built for financial markets.

What Joe passed down

How to choose

Category contrasts — without naming competitors.

Boutique founder-led vs platform contingency

A platform contingency shop optimizes for volume and coverage. A founder-led boutique optimizes for short slates, desk ownership, and one person who stays accountable when the search gets hard.

Desk specialist vs generalist staffing

Generalist staffing will fill “any finance seat.” Desk specialists recruit trading ops, middle office, quant research, fund accounting, and the vendors next to those desks — and refuse the rest.

Confidential search vs high-volume posting

High-volume posting broadcasts a role. Confidential search is for funds and banks that need a quiet map of people already in seats, with no public employer name until the candidate is relevant.

Choose a global platform when you need global scale. Call Emerald when the search is specialized, the market is narrow, and you want a small number of candidates who are actually worth interviewing.

We partner with leading financial institutions to identify talent across Portfolio Management, Trading, Quantitative Research, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Technology, Risk, Middle Office, Regulatory, Compliance, Operations, Finance, and Accounting — on the buy side, sell side, and vendors beside those desks.

Professionalism

Every mandate is represented accurately, to clients and candidates alike. Careers are long and this market is small.

Rigor

We map the market properly rather than working the first names that surface, and we challenge a brief when the market says it needs one.

Discretion

Confidential searches stay confidential. Candidates in seats are approached carefully and never exposed.

Genuine curiosity

About people, about businesses, and about how the markets actually work. It is the reason we ask better questions.

Built in-house

Technology we built for our own desk.

Emerald has grown by combining deep market knowledge with technology we have built specifically for our own business. We have developed proprietary, in-house AI tools to support:

  • Sourcing
  • Research
  • Candidate evaluation
  • Market intelligence
  • Recruiting workflows

Built around financial markets and their infrastructure, our tools help us map firms, teams, and talent more thoroughly before targeted outreach begins.

Technology informs the search; it does not make the call. Persistent outreach, recruiter judgment, and real relationships reveal the person behind the profile and whether the fit is right.

Areas we cover

Front, middle, and back office — plus the technology that powers them.

Let's build something lasting

We are not interested in simply filling jobs. We build long-term partnerships with clients and candidates that help firms grow, teams perform, and careers move forward.
